Florida is an angler’s paradise, boasting a diverse array of fish species and habitats. In the Sunshine State, some of the most popular fish to target include redfish, snook, tarpon, spotted seatrout and largemouth bass.

Redfish are one of Florida’s favorite inshore species. From March through June, they move from inland estuaries to nearshore reefs in search of food. The Gulf Coast offers some great opportunities for catching these hard-fighting gamefish on light tackle with live bait or artificial lures alike.

Snook are another highly sought-after gamefish throughout Florida due to their acrobatic fight when hooked. They can be found in both inshore and offshore waters, but are most commonly caught near mangrove shorelines, docks, and jetties. Live bait is the best way to catch these fish, but effective artificial lures can also be used in a pinch.

Tarpon fishing is an unforgettable experience for any angler lucky enough to hook into one of these behemoth gamefish. They migrate up and down Florida’s coast from spring through fall and can reach sizes upwards of 100 pounds! Tarpon prefer live bait such as crabs or pinfish fished near structure like piers, bridges, or deep channels.

Spotted seatrout are ubiquitous across Florida’s coastal waters. These fish travel in schools and are often found around shallow grass beds, oyster bars, or mangrove edges. Plastics, shrimp-imitating lures, and live bait like shrimp and mud minnows can be used to catch these tasty fish.

Largemouth bass are the most popular freshwater gamefish in Florida. They inhabit lakes, rivers, and creeks across the state where anglers can target them with a variety of artificial lures such as jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and topwater poppers. Bass of all sizes can be caught during both summer and winter months depending on the particular waterbody you’re fishing.

With a range of species and habitats to explore, visitors and locals alike can take advantage of an unforgettable outdoor experience. Put on your waders, pick up your rod, and get ready for an adventure!
